Faculty Advisor

Will Thurber joined the Faculty of Business and Information Technology (FBIT) in 2009. He teaches Critical Thinking and Ethics (BUSI 1010), Business Communications (BUSI 1020) and Marketing Communications (BUSI 3200). He joined FBIT after spending 10 years as a faculty member at Brock University. He earned his BA from Eisenhower College and his MBA from Clarkson University.

 

He has worked in the private sector as an entrepreneur and served on national trade associations where he led a national anti-impaired driving partnership between private industry and the federal government. Active on and off campus, he currently serves on the Board of the Oshawa Kicks Soccer Club and is a member of 100 Men of Oshawa.  He is the Faculty Advisor to the FBIT Students' Society (BITSoc).  When he is not in class, he can often be found riding his bike on the many trails in Oshawa or in his seat at Scotia Bank Centre cheering for the Toronto Raptors.

Abu George Kuttenchirayil

Commerce Coordinator

Abu George is in his 2nd year of the Commerce program at Ontario Tech University hoping to major in Accounting. 

 

Abu George will be serving as the Commerce Coordinator, and is looking to work and collaborate will all commerce students to ensure their time at Ontario Tech can be the best it can possibly be.

 

In his free time, Abu George enjoys playing basketball and playing the piano among many other hobbies and interests.

Casey Wirt

Associate Operations Officer

Casey is so excited to be entering her final year of schooling. She is currently taking Accounting and plans to pursue her CPA designation. 

 

This is her first year on BITSoc and she is very excited to be Associate Operations Officer.

 

In Casey’s free time she enjoys reading, spending time with friends and family and doing anything that involves the outdoors.

Sulaman Shah

Advisor

Sulaman is entering his fourth year in the Bachelor of IT program with a major in Technology Management. He is very passionate about Business and IT and would like to go into a client-focused role in Tech Consulting/Sales after graduating! 

 

He started his student leadership journey by taking various Operations Executive roles at Netsoc for 2 years! He then in 2020/2021 went to become the BITSoc President where he and his team restructured the society to re-establish estranged relations between the FBIT clubs, student union, faculty and overall student body!  Along with his team, he was able to successfully implement a new structure that was praised by the faculty, students, student union, and clubs for its effective way to bring change to BITSoc that had not been done in many years! He also started a student-run virtual learning task force to communicate with professors and students on ways, we can change testing methods to not involve virtual proctoring software and solve issues with the current virtual learning environment!

 

He currently is now an Advisor to the current leadership team to BITSoc where he utilizes his leadership experience and passion in student advocacy to advise on matters that impact the overall student experience in the Faculty of Business and IT at Ontario Tech! He also is the President of Netsoc and one of the founders and Co-President of a newly formed club, TMSA (Tech Management Student Association).

 

Sulaman has a great passion for finding ways to help students exceed outside of the classroom and how they can become career-ready! He also is a strong advocate for student advocacy!

 

Apart from school and extra-curricular activities Sulaman enjoys exploring new places, binge-watching Sc-Fi shows and catching up on new developments in tech!

Aditya Patel

Chief Finance Officer

Aditya is entering his last year in the Business Commerce program with a double major in Accounting and Finance. After graduation, he hopes to achieve his career goal of becoming a CPA and CFA!

 

He started his involvement on campus as a VP of Marketing & IT for OTAA and Senior marketing executive for Ontario Tech Design League. He is still at the OTAA but has joined BITSoc recently as a Chief Financial Officer!

 

In his free time, Aditya loves new adventures and exploring new places. If he is not adventuring, he is most likely watching sports or playing video games!

Utku Soytekin

IT Coordinator

Utku is in his first year in the Networking and I.T Security program. After doing engineering for a year and a half in SFU, he is in Ontario Tech and he is a part of BitSoc as the I.T coordinator.

Utku is very passionate about networking and cybersecurity. He is working on the BITSoc website and hopes to start doing workshops soon. In his free time, he likes watching football and playing guitar.

Rumiza Tariq

Associate Communications Officer

Rumiza is starting her second year in the Business Commerce program. She hasn’t decided on her major yet but hopes to make a decision until the end of the year. 

 

This is Rumiza’s second year working with BITSoc, she started as the Associate Operations Officer in the 2020-2021 term and is now joining as the Associate Communications Officer. She is also an exec at OTAA as an Event Coordinator. 

 

During her free time Rumiza enjoys exploring new recipes, reading books (always open for recommendations) and spending time with her family.

John McBride

Chief Operations Officer

John is entering his second year in the Business Commerce program. He hopes to major in accounting and minor in Supply Chain/Operations Management with hopes to achieve his CPA designation following graduation. 

 

This is John’s second year on BITSoc. He first joined on as the Commerce Liaison during the 2020-2021 school year, and is now joining the team again for the 2021-2022 academic year as the Chief Operations Officer.

Outside of school, John is passionate and active in domestic politics, loves networking with students and enjoys making people laugh.

Amy Lee

Chief Technology Officer

Amy is entering her second year in an Information Technology program. She is majoring in Networking and IT security.

 

This is Amy’s first year on BITSoc and  she is the Chief Technology Officer for the 2021-2022 school year. She is looking forward to collaborating with others all while supporting students in the Faculty of Business and IT. 

 

In her free time, she enjoys playing the guitar, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.

Meaghan Good

Chief Communications Officer

Meaghan is entering her third year in the Information Technology program with a major in Technology Management. 

 

After starting Women in IT in 2018 with five ambitious executive members and a small member list of 10, she switched to Durham College to obtain a diploma in Computer Systems Technician. In 2020, she came back to OTU and started in BITSoc as the Associate Communications Officer in the 2020/2021 academic school year and is currently in the position of Chief Communications Officer.  She is also a part of two other organizations: Women in IT as President, and Co-President of the Technology Management Student Association that was founded in April 2021.

 

When Meaghan is not in school, she either watches movies or TV shows, plays her piano, cooks some delicious food or goes on adventures (driving or hiking).

Christian Riggi

Vice President of Information Technology

Christian is entering his third year of Game Development & Interactive Media. He wants to develop his artistic skills and knowledge in Game Development to one day, be able to work in the industry among big Game Development studios.

 

This is his first year on the team as the VP of Information Technology. He plans to act as an advisor to all of IT and help bridge the gap between IT, Commerce and the faculty.

 

Outside of school, Christian is trying to learn new things (like the guitar) or is spending time with friends and family. He also enjoys playing video games, soccer and golf with friends.

Kareem Olatinwo

Vice President of Commerce

Kareem is looking forward to his third year towards his Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Technology Management. He is passionate about the future of technology in business, innovation and entrepreneurship.

 

On campus, he is involved as an Ambassador and with the Finance Association as the Chief Operations Officer.

 

Kareem also enjoys volunteering in the community and supporting youth development. He loves public speaking and performing spoken word. An avid sports fan, he also enjoys playing ping pong and soccer! #ChelseaChampionsOfEurope

Hannah Oegema

President

Hannah is entering her fourth year in the Business Commerce program. With a major in Accounting and a minor in International Business, she hopes to explore her options abroad after obtaining her CPA designation. 

 

After starting the Women in Business Club on campus with a group of excited students in 2018, Hannah has found a passion for empowering women in leadership roles on campus. As one of the first female BITSoc Presidents, she hopes to encourage other students to step outside their comfort zones and look for new opportunities. 

 

In her freetime, Hannah finds joy in collecting postcards and loves being outside in a social setting. Her messages are always open to discuss women empowerment, issues facing students, and mental health advocacy
